Allana M. Benham is a contemporary figurative artist living and working in Montreal. Since 2003, she has co-directed Atelier de Brésoles with her husband Eric Mannella. In 2015, she published the first English translation of Dr. Paul Richer's book New Artistic Anatomy: Female Morphology. She has an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BA in Museum Studies from Brown University, and studied landscape painting at the Florence Academy of Art. While at Brown University, she prepared a catalogue of the Minassian Collection of Persian, Islamic, and Mughal miniature paintings. She is a specialist in artistic anatomy and has led courses at Ubisoft and Syn Studio and lectured at the Academy of Realist Art, Boston and the Sadie Valeri Atelier in San Francisco. Allana Benham is related to Jane Benham Hay (1829-1905). She paints in oil, draws with a variety of media, and makes drypoint monoprints. She is hard at work on her next artistic and literary endeavours.

Bring your own art project and materials and enjoy some focused work time in a communal artistic environment. All artists and materials are welcome: drawing, painting in acrylic, watercolour, oil; journaling, scrapbooking, craft, knitting, sewing, etc. If you do not have a project underway, there will be some options to choose from. Easels and drawing boards provided. We are hoping to repeat this as a monthly event!

I had a wonderful time visiting Sadie Valeri's inspiring atelier and speaking with her students about the work of Dr. Paul Richer. We discussed Richer's approach to human anatomy and morphology and investigated his findings on the forms of the male and female body.
